Teenagers Tune in to the Soul Rebels; Brass Band Inspires Young Musicians at Festival

TUNEFUL teenagers are getting to play alongside one of America's coolest bands as an international festival gets under way.

Young people working with Durham Music Service are drumming to the same beat as The Soul Rebels Brass Band as part of Brass: Durham International Festival.

Before turning up in County Durham the seven-piece ensemble from New Orleans gained their musical stripes gigging with an Alist of legendary groups and singers including James Brown, Green Day, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees and Jimmy Page.

Organised by Durham County Council with support from Arts Council England North East, the festival attracts performers from as far away as Japan, Norway and Romania.

Now in its fifth year the festival is showcasing performers to audiences in venues across County Durham, ranging from the city centre to rural village locations.

Along with entertaining the crowds the festival aims to educate and nurture the region's upcoming brass musicians of the future. …
