Bears Boss Targets Return to Top Form

Article excerpt

TEAM boss Jitendra Duffill has challenged his Redcar Bears side to erase memories of their Newport nightmare when they take on high-flying Somerset Rebels tonight.

The Ridewell/Simpson Racing UK Bears visited South Wales on Saturday feeling confident of getting a result against their struggling hosts.

But despite a faultless five-ride maximum from Jason Lyons, they slumped to a 55-38 defeat.

Now Duffill has told his troops to show their true form against the Rebels at South Tees Motorsports Park this evening (7.30pm start).

"I fancied us to at least take a point at Newport," he admitted, "so there's no getting away from it - it was disappointing, especially as Jason scored 18 points.

"The riders who didn't perform need to be looking at what went wrong and putting it right tonight.

"Somerset are a strong team and I think it will go down to the wire tonight, but we've been consistent at home this season and we're capable of beating them."

The margin of Saturday's defeat was something of a shock, given the Bears' good form at home in recent weeks.

But there was nothing surprising about the form of Lyons, who is back to his breath-taking best after a stuttering start to his time on Teesside.

And tonight he goes in search of his third straight maximum, having also gone through the card unbeaten when guesting for Newcastle on Sunday.

"Jason has shown a lot of character to come back from the dip in form he had," said Duffill.

"It's a Catch 22 situation because when you're not scoring points, you're not earning the money to put into your equipment to enable you to score points.

"So he deserves full credit for coming through it and shutting up all his critics, and it shows we were right to stick with him."

The Rebels are currently fifth in the Premier League table, with matches in hand over two of the teams above them. …
