UNDER pressure from Audi and determined to wrest its premium segment lead back from Mercedes-Benz, BMW is planning to unleash a rash of new and updated models in Australia.

Volume highlights will include the second-generation 1-Series hatch in October and the next-generation 3-Series from March 2012.

The bottom-end of the 5-Series range will receive a boost at year's end when two versions of the new turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine arrive in the form of the 520i and the 528i.

It will be the first time since 1996 that a 520i has been part of the local 5-Series line-up.

It will also signal the demise of the naturally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engine from the range with the departure of the 3.0-litre 528i.

The Z4 sports car will also introduce the N20 sDrive20i and sDrive28i about the same time.

The 1-Series coupe and convertible get their mid-life facelift in August, while a $47,400, 120i will be added to the range.

Perhaps confusingly, this is not N20, but the old 115kW naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. …
