Pardew Can Still Splash the Cash; Football

NEWCASTLE boss Alan Pardew insists he still has the cash available to buy a top class striker as he attempts to push through a deal.

On the day owner Mike Ashley's Sports Direct firm announced profits of pounds 200m, United were bidding to land the frontman they need before the start of the new season.

Pardew still has much of the pounds 35m raised from the January sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool burning a hole in his pocket but he is struggling to tie down a striking target.

Paris St Germain's Mevlut Erding remains one despite suggestions he wants to stay in France and the boss has previously missed out on the likes of Kevin Gameiro and Gervinho.

Pardew is keen to make a significant breakthrough as soon as possible. He said: "I don't really want to mention names, but all strikers available, we are keeping a close eye on.

"It's important that we keep bolstering the team. We have obviously been looking for a striker - we are still bidding for one as we speak - but it's not easy, they are always the most difficult to get across the line. …
