Hospital ball

The ball in aid of the Hospital, which was held in the School of Arts on Wednesday night, was very successful. There were about 300 people present. Mr JT Ryalls was master of ceremonies. The music was provided by a number of ladies and the supper was admirably served by the committee of ladies. The financial results represented over 100 pounds. (May 20)

Convent concert

Another enjoyable event was the concert given by the pupils of the Convent school which took place in the theatre on Thursday night. The Sisters of Mercy deserve the warmest praise for the time and trouble they devoted to the training of the children. (May 20)

Moving theatre

A notable feature of the holiday season was the visit of Philip Lytton's Moving Theatre. The huge marquee was crowded at every one of the four entertainments given by the company. Better acting and more interesting plays have never been seen in Gladstone. (May 20)

Sale of work

On Wednesday last, a sale of work was held in the Theatre Royal in aid of the Anglican Parish Hall. It was opened by the Mayor, Ald JH Kessell. There were fine displays of preserved fruits, fancy goods, and useful articles. The effort resulted in a profit of 65 pounds. The receipts would have been larger, but the acetylene gas plant developed eccentricity about half past nine o'clock, with the result that stallholders were plunged into darkness for some three quarters of an hour. When the gas was coaxed into lighting trim again, it was found that a number of patrons had gone home. (August 14)

Premier's visit

The Premier, Hon DF Denham and the Attorney-General, Hon T O'Sullivan, left Brisbane last night by mail train for Gladstone, where they will be entertained today. The Premier intends to return to Brisbane on Tuesday morning. …
