Outpouring Says It All; Vale Young Halley Appleby, a Great Bloke Who Touched So Many People

SLATTS ON FRIDAY

Peter Slattery

THE sudden, tragic death of Halley Appleby this week as a result of injuries sustained during a game of footy has touched us all. It is simply a tragedy.

A young bloke, doing what he loves to do, takes the ball up and pays the ultimate price. It is impossible not to question it and a few other things as well.

I lost my mother in my early 20s. That was tough. What about the reverse? I cannot even begin to fathom the challenge Halley's parents are experiencing. And let's not forget those very close to him, both male and female.

Our hearts and thoughts are with them all at this most emotional of times.

The length, depth and breadth of the outpouring at Halley's death are a tribute to the sort of bloke he was. Club mates, school mates, friends of the family, and acquaintances have contacted the Dolphins with tales of great times with Halley, as well as expressing disbelief and condolences.

He obviously was no ordinary bloke.

And life goes on, forever forward with memories of Halley as he was and how he influenced the lives of those lucky enough to call him son, brother, boyfriend and mate.

Vale Halley, taken far, far too early mate.

As a sign of respect, I'll take a more serious tone than normal for today's column.
