NEWCASTLE Falcons new boy Ashley Wells is relishing the Aviva Premiership armwrestle, as he prepares for his first season of English rugby.

The South African prop is expected to play a big part in the early campaign, with Scotland's Euan Murray absent on World Cup duty.

More accustomed to plying his trade on the sundrenched Highveld with Griquas, the prospect of fronting up during the cold English winter holds no fear for the new recruit.

"We get the Aviva Premiership games back home on TV, so I have been watching as much as I can," said Wells, who turns 26 on Friday.

"It looks like a great competition, but I know it will take some getting used to because it is obviously different from what I have been used to in South Africa." Helping Griquas to the final of this year's Vodacom Cup, he added: "I am accustomed to the pitches being rock hard and bone dry, whereas here there is going to be a lot more wet ball and muddy ground to contend with. …
