MACKAY horse owners have been encouraged to take their horses straight to a veterinary clinic at the first signs of sickness.

Stabler and Howlett veterinarian Dr Bruce Howlett has warned horse owners to have their horses checked out if they are feeling unwell to rule out the hendra virus.

C[pounds sterling]If horse owners think there is something wrong with their horse then seek advice from your veterinarian.C[yen]

Dr Howlett said not to move your horse if it was sick, because if there was the risk of it coughing or sneezing in the back of the trailer it could spread the virus.

C[pounds sterling]There are great variations of symptoms with the hendra virus, the classic is fever, depression and respiratory signs such as coughing and discharge from the nose.
