Pupils Tread Boards at Annual Show
MORE than 30 pupils from a Newcastle school have been treading the boards for the annual end of year show.
Bowler hats and flapper dresses filled the stage for a show-stopping performance of Bugsy Malone at Excelsior Academy, in the West End.
Saarah Nijaila, subject development leader for drama and one of the directors of the show, said: "The end of year show is always a fantastic opportunity for pupils from across the academy - from 11 to 18.
"This year, it was very much about letting our sixthformers go out with a bang as well as encouraging them to nurture the younger talent coming up through the school.
"All of the sixth-form students have been working really hard. If they are not in the show they have been coming in on evenings and at weekends to coach the younger actors, build the set and help with costumes."
In keeping with the musical's spirit of working together, two pupils shared the lead part of Bugsy.
The first, Callum Beadle Taylor, 18, was responsible for coaching and nurturing Year Nine pupil Dzikamai Mudamburi, 14, who was acting for the first time. …
