GYMPIE police are seeking help in finding a motorist who may have been involved in yesterday's crash between a truck and 4WD ute on Rainbow Beach Rd.

A 23-year-old man from Wurtulla suffered multi-trauma when the ute his uncle was driving and a truck that had jackknifed in front of them collided about 10am.

The tipper truck and dog trailer had rounded the crest on Rainbow Beach Rd travelling towards Gympie and allegedly braked suddenly to avoid traffic stopped up ahead.

Witnesses first on the scene said a vehicle towing a boat had stopped to turn right, but continued ahead after the crash occurred behind it.

Indications at the scene have led police to believe that the tipper truck's brakes may only have engaged at the front, causing the truck to jackknife.

The truck headed across the oncoming lane and the ute, heading in the opposite direction, collided with its rear. The impact was so great it tore the truck's back axle and differential off and rolled the truck on to its side, before the ute became lodged under the drawbar between the truck and the trailer. …
