SEVEN-year-old Angela Gray from Centaur Primary School has won a $50 Kmart gift voucher and the first spot prize awarded in the national 2011 Kmart Art of Giving competition.

Now in its third year, the competition provides students with a creative way to think about how they help others.

Centaur Primary School's principal Darren Scott was thrilled with the recognition Angela received and said the competition was a great way to encourage discussion in the classroom about helping out and thinking of others.

aHer work, Colourful Heart, shows the sense of joy you can get from helping others,a Mr Scott said.

aMany communities have faced incredible challenges this year, so we thought it fitting to choose helping others as our theme,a said Kmart Tweed Heads store manager David Fox.

aAngela has done a great job expressing how she cares for others,a Mr Fox said. aWe have an amazing 1400 registrants and I'm impressed by the quality of artworks submitted so far.

aBy registering, teachers are giving their school a chance at winning a share of the national cash prize pool of $50,000,a he said.

As well as securing prize money for their school, the national winning student will receive a Sony Handycam, while state winners will receive Sony Cybershot digital cameras.

To enter, students are invited to draw, paint a picture or make a collage that demonstrates how they help others.

Every student who participates in the 2011 competition will receive a Kmart Art of Giving certificate and will be in the running to win the national and state prizes.

Each month, judges will be awarding spot prizes for entries that have been uploaded to the online gallery, found at: www.kmart.com.au/artofgiving.

TWEED Shire Council launched its Contact Centre and revamped customer service areas last week, marking the occasion with small celebrations at its main office in Murwillumbah and branch office in Tweed Heads as part of Local Government Week. …
