Silver lining

SWIMMING: Gold medals were hard to come by but a rush of silver at the Shanghai world championships has head coach Leigh Nugent believing several Australian swimmers can take the next step at the London Olympics.

While statistically Australia failed to improve on their disappointing showing at the 2009 world championships, Nugent believes a number of minor medal performances showed the Dolphins are better placed two years on and in an aencouraginga position a year out from London.

The breakout performance by James Magnussen highlighted Australia's meet, as he won the 100m freestyle and played a leading role in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay victory, and Nugent believes the 20-year-old can be the driving force of the team going forward. …
