WHEN Eton police officer Senior Constable Gary Knack saw this crushed white utility, he was certain the occupants of the vehicle were dead.

A 17-year-old man was trapped inside the destroyed four-wheel drive while the 17-year-old male driver of the vehicle was lying on the ground nearby after pulling himself from the wreckage.

Yesterday afternoon, the ute's passenger, who celebrated his Year 12 formal with his St Patrick's College schoolmates on Saturday night, was in a serious but stable condition in Townsville Hospital with critical head injuries.

The driver, who had critical head and chest injuries, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance. He was in a stable condition yesterday.

The trapped passenger was freed by Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers before being transported to Townsville Hospital by the RACQ-CQ Rescue helicopter.
