Sharpe Locked out of Wallabies Squad

RUGBY UNION: Western Force coach Richard Graham remains confident Nathan Sharpe will make Australia's World Cup squad despite the veteran lock's shock dumping for Saturday's clash with New Zealand.

Sharpe, 33, was overlooked in favour of returning lock Dan Vickerman when Robbie Deans named a 24-man touring party yesterday for the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup Test at Auckland's Eden Park.

Waratahs rookie Sitaleki Timani was also included in the squad ahead of Sharpe.

Vickerman is expected to vie with Queenslanders James Horwill and Rob Simmons for the second-row starting roles.

Although the selections appear to have put Sharpe's World Cup hopes in doubt, Graham says the veteran remains one of the best locks in the world and is too valuable to leave out for rugby's showpiece event, starting next month.
