JOB TITLE: Healthcare assistant. WHERE DO YOU WORK? I work on the maternity unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? As a healthcare assistant on the unit I provide basic nursing care to pregnant women and their baby. I assist midwives by preparing and cleaning delivery rooms, set out and prepare instrumental trolleys and carry out floor counts during theatre procedures to make sure all equipment is accounted for.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITIES YOU NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF WORK? I believe that good communication and patient understanding is important. You also have to have patience, a strong work ethic and enjoy your job.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION? On October 26 this year I will have been in my post on maternity for 31 years.

WHERE DID YOU TRAIN AND WHAT DID THAT TRAINING INVOLVE? I have completed most of my training for this job in-house, learning from midwives past and present. …
