SEVERAL creek crossings and narrow winding trails made for a picturesque but challenging outing for the MNC cross country runners on Sunday morning.

The Sherwood Forest race typically claims a few casualties with this week's outing no exception due to the lead 5km runner suffering a rolled ankle while out on the technical course.

None handled the conditions better, however, than the in-form Jules Crawshaw who powered through the slightly long 10km in a slick 42 minutes 15seconds.

Perennial runner-up Jason Smit chased hard with 42.46 while Nigel Cotsell finished a further three minutes in arrears.

Michelle Pearson was dominant in the women's race, comfortably clear of second placed Tenielle Stubbs with Tina Thompson finishing strongly in third. Karlie Swanson, a first-timer to the MNC series, used the 5km as a warm-up race prior to representing New South Wales at the National cross country championships in Canberra on August 20.

A quick lead out was just enough for her to hold off a fastfinishing Jacinta Smithers by 12 seconds. …
