FIFO Interest Taking off; TOP FLIGHT IDEA: Mining Companies Buying into Proposal for Coolangatta Terminal

A FLY-in, fly-out service from Gold Coast Airport has received widespread interest from mining companies.

Gold Coast City Council mayor Ron Clarke said 24 submissions had been made to the FIFO Terminal consortium in response to an invitation for an expression of interest that closed last Friday.

The council's plan was to fly-in, fly-out about 2000 miners from the Gold Coast Airport to mines across Queensland.

aThis has been beyond our expectations and really it was the work of Paul Donovan at the Gold Coast Airport,a Cr Clarke said.

aThis is only an expression of interest and there are still things that have to be worked out.

aThere have been some protests, in some of the mining areas, that have to be sorted out.

aThey (mining companies) wanted to sort it out here, before going back and sorting it out in the mining communities.

Cr Clarke said there would be a need for some restriction at the airport, but it would depend on details such as the number of flights required. …
