AN OAKEY community group is concerned it will have to move from its well-established premises if it is forced to pay rates for the first time in 60 years.

Queensland Country Women's Association Oakey branch vice-president Judith Sloss said Toowoomba Regional Council had approached the group to get them to sign a lease on the Cherry St rest rooms late last year.

She said the proposal would mean the volunteer-run organisation would have to pay rates, utilities and rent on the council-owned building, something they had not had to do when it was owned by the former Jondaryan and Rosalie shire councils.

Fellow vice-president Lois Speed said it would mean the fee charged to the many Oakey community groups who used the building for meetings would have to be increased. …
