Colonel Can Mak It All Right at Ripon

Article excerpt

THE last time Colonel Mak was in command he landed the silver version of the Ayr Gold Cup at the Western meeting in September. It is his biggest success so far and I fancy he can resume his authority for the more valuable William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon today.

To be fair to him, he hadn't been at his best this time round until returning to form with a bang in the Scottish Stewards' Cup at Hamilton last month by chasing home Quest For Success.

He found his feet in the second half of last season and, although still a couple of pounds above his last winning mark, he has come down in the handicap and looks capable of defying his current rating when he has his favoured conditions.

That form has been well advertised since by his conqueror who has gone to make his presence felt in Pattern company by capturing a couple of Group Three prizes.

While Waffle has an abundance of talent, he has only ever won one race, a maiden on his debut as a two-year-old for Jeremy Noseda, He seems reluctant to put his head in front when given the chance and we can expect him to arrive late on the scene. He is more than capable of landing one of these major handicaps but it will be no easy task for his apprentice rider to produce him at the precise moment. …
