Duo Bid to Avoid Curse of Witches; Diamonds and Bandits Face Ipswich Tests

Article excerpt

BOTH the North East's speedway teams line up this weekend against the same opposition as they take on Ipswich Witches in back-to-back Premier League matches, writes LAWRENCE HEPPELL.

Berwick Bandits are back at Shielfield Park tonight (7pm) flushed with success after an amazing 21-point victory over Plymouth Devils in Devon last weekend.

Team manager Ian Rae said: "I still cannot wipe the smile off my face!.

"I thought we would have a hard fight to get anything from the Devils - but every one of my Bandits was in such a determined mood it turned out to be the easiest match I have had with the team - they just kept on winning!" Now the A & J Scott Bandits have to turn their attention to Ipswich - fresh from speedway's Elite League and five places above Berwick in the Premier League standings.

A Shielfield Park spokesperson said: "We have our seven heroes from the Plymouth match all ready to go again.

"Ipswich will have Danish star Morten Risager in their team, however - he was missing the last time they were up here. Alongside former Bandit Kevin Doolan from Australia, France's top rider Mathieu Tresarrieu and the brilliant teenager Lasse Bjerre, this looks a tough enough test for our guys."

The Witches will be without Chris Mills, their regular reserve rider - he has a foot injury - but have drafted in-form James Holder (brother of Australia's Number One Chris) as a more-thanadequate guest.

The Witches entourage then travel to Brough Park to tackle Newcastle Diamonds tomorrow (6.30pm).

The brief for the home side is the same as Berwick's - taking points from the high-flying Witches is imperative.

Ipswich will use Richie Worrall's twin brother Stevie as a guest for the missing Mills.

Before that, Newcastle visit Derwent Park tonight when they take on the Workington Comets. …
