NEWCASTLE United's newly-anointed number one Tim Krul declared himself happy with the goalless draw which kicked off their new campaign.

Krul celebrated his new status with a clean sheet as part of a fine defensive effort on United's part and the Holland goalkeeper believes it is a fine base for the new-look team to build on.

The importance of not losing was considerable with the Wear-Tyne derby hurtling around the corner and Krul reckons that Newcastle's back four deserves plenty of credit.

"We definitely think this is a good start. We were more than pleased with this result and happy with the result," he said.

"Everyone has been saying Arsenal are not the team they used to be but they are always up there and will be this season. We knew they would com out fighting. We dealt with them really well. They only had one proper shot on goal. The rest our defence dealt with fantastically."

Having edged out Steve Harper - who was not in the bench - in the race for the starting spot, Krul's priority now is to maintain performance levels and secure the role for the long-term. …
