NEW and regular athletes around the region are invited to sign on for the fast-approaching 2011/12 Little Athletics season.

Ipswich Little Athletics Centre officials are planning sign-ons on August 26, 27 and 30 at the Bill Paterson Oval, Limestone Park.

The first sign-on is a Friday week, from 5pm-8pm.

The Saturday August 27 sign-on times are from 10am-1pm.

Tuesday's final sign-on is from 4pm-7pm.

That day is also the centre's first training session.

Little Athletics commenced in Ipswich in 1976 as Bundamba Little Athletics. It moved to Bill Paterson Oval in 1981 with a name change to Ipswich Little Athletics.

For many years the average registrations have been 350 athletes.

Last season, 332 athletes aged five-16 were registered at the centre.

All age groups compete in a total of five track and field events each Friday night commencing at 6pm.

Track events consist of sprints, distance, hurdles and walk.

Field events are long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, discus and javelin. …
