THE SPATE of capsizes on the Richmond River bar at Ballina a there have been seven this year a has prompted Wollongbar yachtie Iain McCabe to hold a workshop on bar crossings.

He said he didn't know of any course of its type in Australia.

Mr McCabe is the owner of charter boat company Baysail and a volunteer for three years with Marine Rescue Ballina, where he is a skipper and trainer/assessor.

His business is a registered training organisation, he is an offshore yachtmaster instructor with Yachting Australia and has conducted seamanship training for the past 11 years.

While boaties with a general licence don't have to do bar crossings to get their licence, commercial operators, like Mr McCabe, have to complete 10 bar crossings in different conditions under the observation of an experienced skipper to gain their qualification.

More importantly, he has logged more than 2000 crossings of the Ballina bar. …
