GRIM figures released this week show inflation is far outstripping wage rises.

And with the jump in prices, there is an increase in the number of families forced to tighten their belts to stay afloat.

Mam-of-two Ami Sweeney has felt the impact of the creeping rise in the cost of living, which saw the index rate of inflation leap to 4.4% last month.

The 35-year-old says her food shopping bills have been getting bigger and bigger as she struggles to provide a healthy eating regime for her two young children.

She said: "We budget on a weekly basis, and it's difficult. The biggest thing you're conscious of as parents is wanting to give your children a good diet.

"But the most expensive foods are the healthy ones.

"The Government bleats on about the importance of fruit and vegetables, but when you go to the shops they're the most expensive things on the shelves, while convenience and junk food is what's cheapest."

Ami, who lives with husband Allan and three-year-old twins Erin and Joseph in Ashington, Northumberland, is concerned the 3.1% rise in the cost of clothing and footwear since July 2010 will hit her hard as she supports her growing children. …
