LUXURY meets sporty. It sounds like a Spice Girls reunion a but alas, thankfully, no.

Although there is plenty of showmanship about the Suzuki Swift Classic.

This limited edition model has some extra bling inside and out, with only about 45 examples made available exclusively by Suzuki Queensland.

The Sunshine State distributor says it takes the Swift upmarket with the inclusions like sat nav and leather trim a all for only a couple of grand more than the range-topping GLX.

Depending on its success, we may well see more of these well-kitted Swifts. Survey just about any metropolitan car park and you'll see a bevy of the little Suzuki hatchbacks, many with their own individual touches.

We've seen it at the premium end of the new car market, with models such as the Mini Cooper and Audi A1 offering an array of ways to individualise through option packages. Heck, even Lexus has done it with great success, giving their sensible offerings LS Sport treatment.

Comfort

Double-stitched leather trim with aClassica embroidered into the backs and with a groovy Clarion entertainment system with touch-screen, it's certainly no run-of-the-mill Suzi.

It's not a massive makeover. You don't step inside and feel transported into the lap of luxury, but it is definitely a refined step up for the model.

Everything else is pretty much your standard GL-finished Swift. Some hard plastics through the console and dash, but you even get that in a Mini nowadays.

There are no specified cup holders, but you can easily jam drink bottles in two openings in the console without fear of them disappearing at the first corner.

All seats are comfy, the front pairing particularly good around torso and rear, and you have head and legroom for four adults.

The ride is mostly good and quiet, although at highway speeds you get a reasonable amount of road rumble.

On the road

All the Classic's changes have been superficial. Despite the chequered-flag stripe which runs down the centre and bigger alloys, there is no gain in power or torque.

Under the bonnet is a 70kW 1.4-litre four-potter that is an honest little goer.

It won't inspire the boy-racers, but around town it's a serviceable unit which does the job well and doesn't sip much fuel.

The lack of instant power is felt if you summon the Swift for rapid acceleration. You really have to ring the Swift's neck to get high up into the rev range to achieve the desired outcome.

Those regularly negotiating hilly terrain would be best served by the manual transmission, as the automatic can be slow to change down. There are still ample positives with the driving experience. The steering feels sharp and direct, and you can change direction with ease, courtesy of a responsive chassis and well-tuned suspension set-up.

Other options

You would be hard-pressed to get the options elsewhere for this money, but key usual competitors are the VW Polo TSI Comfortline ($19,850), Toyota Yaris YRX 5 Door ($21,390), Ford Fiesta Zetec ($23,490) and Mazda2 Genki ($20,495). …
