Modun on Course for an Ebor Victory

Article excerpt

THE best is yet to come as far as Modun is concerned and he can take another significant step in the right direction by landing the Betfred Ebor at York today.

He went up 15lb for an impressive Newbury success on his reappearance, which makes life tougher, but I do not think the higher mark has found him out since.

Admittedly, he was disappointing next time out in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot where he beat only three home.

The problem on that occasion was the soft ground. He prefers a quicker surface.

Down in trip for the John Smith's Cup at York, he found yesterday's Group Three York winner Green Destiny too good for him, although he probably would have finished closer under a more positive ride.

He takes a while to get himself organised and his performance more than hinted that he needs further. Last time at Goodwood, again facing an inadequate test, it took him ages to respond to pressure and he just failed to peg back Arlequin, giving the impression he was not suited by the undulations.

He was a length ahead of Our Joe Mac and the form was given a boost when the third turned the tables narrowly on the winner at York on Wednesday.

A return to a more conventional course should see Modun in a more favourable light.

For a horse who likes to come from off the pace, the long straight will be to his advantage and, more importantly, his venture into unknown territory in terms of distance should play to his strengths and bring about the anticipated improvement.

The weather looks promising and the absence of rain will only help his cause. There is likely to be still some cut but not enough to inconvenience him.

Lost In The Moment would have beaten Opinion Poll in the Goodwood Cup but for being stopped in his tracks when making his move the same time has the winner.

He was just behind Modun at York, where again he did not enjoy any luck in running, and he is closely matched with my selection on that form. …
