Harper's Back in Frame for Scunny; New Boy Upbeat

LEE RYDER Chief Sports Writer STEVE HARPER could be in line for a recall to Newcastle United colours in this week's trip to Scunthorpe United's Glanford Park in the Carling Cup.

The long-serving stopper started the season in the stands last weekend against Arsenal with Fraser Forster on the bench.

But Forster's departure to Celtic on loan means that the Easington-born keeper was on the bench today against Sunderland and could figure against Scunny. Harper was assured of his future by United this week in the aftermath of a failed bid for Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

The experienced home-grown product has vowed to fight for his place, and with two years on his contract is keen to see out his career with Newcastle.

United's other options in the goalie department are young Swede Ole Soderberg and England youth international Jak Alnwick.

Stephen Kavanagh, chief executive of Charlton, revealed that his club had snubbed the Magpies' bid to sign Elliot. …
