For the second away game in succession and for the second time this season, Hartlepool United had conceded at the death in an away game to leave them with only a point when it should have been three.

At MK Dons on the opening day, Pool led 2-1 in injury time but a controversially leveller - Jabo Ibehere was offside when he netted - meant a draw.

Two weeks later and Pool led 2-1 in the closing stages, but a header from a player who should not have been on the pitch brought a controversial leveller.

Scott Laird had earlier floored Pool substitute James Poole off the ball in an incident missed by the officials. He not only escaped a red card, but escaped from his marker to head in.

Wadsworth's ire was more directed at his own defence than Laird for the failure to clear a ball in their own area with any authority which led to a first Stevenage goal and lifeline.

Evan Horwood should have put his laces through the ball but instead left a short touch to Ritchie Humphreys who was instantly robbed - and seconds later the scoreline was changed.

It gave Stevenage and their long-ball, high-pressure game a lift and one they didn't pass up.

With two minutes to go, Neil Austin stretched to meet a route one ball and headed it out for a corner.

From the set-piece Laird ran across his marker into space to head in.

Wadsworth said: "It is frustrating overall, but I know these things happen. "You can never rest easy, at two-up the game should be won. Hopefully, this is a massive lesson for us. We should have won at MK Dons, we should have beaten Walsall and we should have won here - but we did not. …
