Doctor Is Forced to Shut Clinic in Cooran

THE hinterland hamlet of Cooran has been left without a doctor after the closure of the Cooran Health Centre.

Doctor Adam Butler made the regretful decision to close the centre following the departure of two doctors about a month ago.

Dr Butler said it had been difficult to find two general practitioners to fill the vacant positions because many young doctors wanted to work in larger practices.

He said the centre, in a three-roomed 1920s bank building, could not grow any more but had reached a size that was also economically difficult to maintain.

aThe problem is trying to run a small clinic. You've got problems with doctor retention but also economically, it's very difficult to keep open,a he said.

Dr Butler, who bought the building and started the centre with his wife, Tracey, six years ago, said in hindsight the surgery should have stayed small. …
