Aims of the Men's Shed

Reduce social isolation.

Improve self-esteem for youth, unemployed, disabled and older men.

Help young men to become self sufficient and prosper.

GENERALLY preceded by an expletive, taking yourself off to the shed for a bit of a think and a hammer is a familiar coping mechanism for many men, and research has proven a bit of a tinker in like-minded company can reduce depression and loneliness.

That's one reason Don Glasby is so keen to see the next Men's Shed built here in Gladstone, though he said the benefits were far greater.

C[pounds sterling]Men around here retire when they've spent their whole lives working, maybe they've been workaholics, he said.

C[pounds sterling]They watch television, they get under the wife's feet, but they don't really have anywhere to go.
