TOM Hanks does Mr Nice Guy again but doesn't he do it well?

As the title character Larry Crowne, Hanks plays a middle-aged, divorced supermarket worker. He has received eight Employee of the Week awards but that doesn't stop him from being unexpectedly fired when the company decides to downsize. Another reason for letting him go, so the boss says, is the fact he never went to college. So what does Larry do? He buys a scooter and enrols at a local college of course.

He joins the public speaking class, taught by the disillusioned and maritally neglected Mercedes Tainot (the one-woman anti-aging campaign that is Julia Roberts). She plays the typically sarcastic, yet inspiring educator. Roberts described her character as apricklya but explained those roles were the fun ones to play.

While Larry develops a hopeless crush on Mercedes, his young and attractive classmate Talia takes him under her wing. …
