KYLE Downey, 17, could make his debut for Whitley Bay against New Marske in the STL Northern League First Division game at Hillheads.

"The lad is from New Hartley and played for the first team in our preseason friendlies when he was excellent. He'll certainly be involved at some stage tomorrow," said manager Ian Chandler, who is happy with the start made by the Seahorses but will be without defender David Pounder today.

"We've taken seven points out of nine and won our FA Cup tie. It was important for us to make a good start and we've got to keep it going this afternoon. I think the race for the championship will be very tight."

Although Dunston UTS comfortably progressed in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday night, they have managed just a couple of points so far and manager Billy Irwin will be looking for a first win at pointless Penrith. He said: "After coming back from a two-goal deficit last Saturday to gain a replay, we put five goals past West Auckland Town which should give the lads a real lift. In addition, the squad is stronger with the return of Michael Dixon, Ben Cattanach and Anthony Hume."

Early pace-setters Newcastle Benfield are the only team with a 100pc record. Three wins have also yielded an impressive goal ratio of 12-1. "We've made a decent start and I've been helped by being able to name the same starting line-up for every game.

"I've got players fighting for their place, just waiting for a chance, which is a great position to be in," said manager Paul Baker before the visit to West Auckland Town.

Ashington boss Gary Milton will definitely be without injured pair Darren Lough and Andy Dugdale and in addition striker Johnny Godsmark will need a late check on his fitness at Sunderland RCA.

The Wearsiders are another side to have made a good start and are fourth with two wins and a draw from three outings. …
