THE final stages of a town square intended for a leafy Tyneside suburb have been put in place.

A team at Trinity Church, in Gosforth, Newcastle, have been planning the attractive community space since the church had a pounds 3.25m refurbishment in 2006.

But after gaining planning permission, the development was put on the back-burner as the popularity of the new Trinity Centre exceeded expectations.

Attention was turned to creating the half-paved and half-grassed town square, aimed at breathing life back into Gosforth High Street after the team received a grant of pounds 100,000 from Newcastle City Council.

Now, part of the square will open on September 12. Plans for the square, at the front of the church include a lawn, patio, trees, hedges, lights and seating.

At the time of the planning in 2009, the project was estimated to cost pounds 400,000. …
