Reported Suicide Really Homicide; Ware County Man Confesses to Shooting Friend at His Home

Ware County Sheriff's Office detectives have determined that the reported suicide of a Waycross man two weeks ago was really a homicide.

Detectives have charged Jeffery Ruben Morgan, 38, of Rubes Lane with murder in the shotgun slaying of his 30-year-old friend Chester Eugene "Bubba" Boyd Jr. on Aug. 12 at Morgan's home, Sheriff Randy Royal told the Times-Union.

Boyd was slain while staying the night with Morgan after the two men had been out drinking earlier in the evening, Royal said.

Morgan initially told detectives that Boyd had killed himself. Morgan said he was asleep in his bedroom when awakened by a gunshot. Morgan told detectives he went into the living room to investigate and found Boyd with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Royal said.

"It's been an open death investigation since then," Royal said.

Family and friends told authorities that Boyd, a former logging company employee, wasn't the type to kill himself. …
