Catches Aplenty in Spite of Climate

THERE have been some impressive catches during one of the coolest August weeks on record.

In The Angel complex, Bowes Lake has been fantastic during dusk and dawn for carp. Ian Dixon caught both a large mirror and a large common on the same evening, while Jon Ethrington from Blyth landed a common of 26lb 4oz. At Lookout Lake there have been some excellent silver fish catches as well as a crucian of 3lb 10oz, while Bassetts has proved a great pond to fish in the heavy winds, because of its sheltered position.

At the Derwent reservoir some coarse anglers have enjoyed another productive week, with Kris Derby taking 39 roach and David McKenna landing 89 roach, both using chopped maggot and worm, while B Nash and C Smith had 20lb and 25lb when fishing the pole.

It has been another busy week on Whittle Dene with The Great Southern producing the best with mixed silver fish totals in excess of 30lb being reported. C Bruce had best catch from here with 41lb 8oz of mainly roach and a few gudgeon, while Dave Coster took 40lb of roach from this lake on the pole fishing hemp and tares.The Lower Lake has been yielding mainly skimmers up to 1lb 4oz each.

On Sunday the Lower hosted the NW Annual WaterAid challenge match where anglers caught some good skimmers.

Hardy Greys generously provided prize fund support as entrants raised pounds 150 for this worthy cause, while the TAA also donated pounds 100.

Martin Watson from Easington won with 10 lb12oz of skimmers ahead of Ray Underwood from Chester-le-Street with 9lb 7oz. Royston Williams was third with 9lb 2oz , Andy Griffiths from Essex fourth on 7lb 13oz while organiser Steve Woods of Burradon was fifth with 6lb 11oz.

Sunday's match on Lookout went to Tony Watson on 56lb 12oz with Chris Gowling runner-up on 53 lb 14 oz and Neil Brown third with 33 lb 13 oz. Saturday's Open on Bowes went to Martin Smith with 58 lb15 oz while Wednesday's match was won by Phil Robertson with 54 lb.

Andy Davidson and Neil Rudd retained the CADCAC Pairs' title when they topped the field of 26 on Crofton Lake. …
