YOUNG North East pitman Bobby Cowell lived out every boy's dream by playing in a Wembley FA Cup- winning side not once but three times.

Including wartime games, full-back Bobby made more than 400 appearances for Newcastle United and was one of only three players - including Jackie Milburn and Bobby Mitchell - to play in all of the club's 1950s FA Cup final triumphs.

Now a collection of his keepsakes will be auctioned next week in Newcastle.

The Anderson & Garland sale on Tuesday will include Bobby's 1955 FA Cup winner's medal from the Wembley final against Manchester City. It is valued at pounds 2,000-pounds 3,000.

His souvenir Cup Final programmes against City, Blackpool in 1951 and Arsenal in 1952 are also for sale, with an estimate of pounds 150-pounds 200.

His other FA Cup keepsakes include player-signed menus from celebratory final dinners at the Savoy Hotel in London and the County Hotel in Newcastle, plus a pictorial souvenir published by The Journal and the Evening Chronicle before the 1952 Wembley match.

Bobby, whose career was ended by injury, remained an ardent fan of United and his invite to the 25th anniversary dinner of Newcastle's 1969 Fairs Cup win and the signed menu from the occasion are also up for bidding.

Among Bobby's photographs is a signed picture of Newcastle players, including Milburn, enjoying an informal relaxation session. It is priced at pounds 80-pounds 140.

Bobby, who died in Newcastle in 1996 aged 73, had also saved items such as the programme for United centre-half Ollie Burton's testimonial match in 1973.

This will be in the auction, along with the threepenny programme for his own testimonial game at St James' Park in 1956 when 36,000 fans rolled up.

His career had been terminated at the age of 33 by a knee injury inflicted by a tackle during a close season tour game in Germany. …
