Villas-Boas Defends Lampard

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS has rubbished claims Frank Lampard's international career may be winding down and insists the midfielder has a long future for both Chelsea and England, writes James Olley.

Lampard gave a subdued performance in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales after being left out of England's victory in Bulgaria amid suggestions he is no longer a key part of Fabio Capello's plans.

But Villas-Boas is standing by the 33-year-old, who is likely to start in tomorrow's Premier League clash at Sunderland, and believes Lampard should still be considered one of the best players in the country.

"He still has a big international future," he said. "This is one of the top players in England and in the Premier League.

"He wants to keep performing club-wise to be performing for the national team. He's up there with the best. It's Capello's choice. I am not in a position to critique managers' choices and I'm not in a position to critique whatever you write. …
