Wallabies Blow: Ioane Has a Thumb Fracture

THE: Wallabies have suffered a major Rugby World Cup blow with scans revealing gun winger Digby Ioane has a fractured thumb requiring surgery.

While the injury would typically take four to six weeks to mend, the Wallabies remain hopeful he will be available again for the knockout stages of the tournament and have not called for a replacement.

He suffered the fracture while playing a starring role in Australia's opening 32-6 win over Italy on Sunday.

The injury occurred with about 20 minutes of play remaining when Ioane accidentally came into contact with the boot of his Italian counterpart Mirco Bergamasco as he attempted to cover a grubber kicked in behind the Australian line.

As Ioane tried to scoop up the ball, his thumb was struck by the boot of Bergamasco, who was attempting to toe the ball further down field.

His absence is a major setback for the Wallabies.
