KING Torus can continue to make up for lost time with victory in the Fortune Stakes at Sandown tomorrow.

An emphatic six-length winner of the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last season, his three-year-old return was delayed until the City of York Stakes on the Knavesmire last month.

Over a trip possibly on the short side now, everything he did at York suggested he retained all his ability, staying on nicely into fourth without being given a hard time.

That impression was backed up last time out at Haydock, where his neck margin of victory in the Superior Mile was not truly indicative of his superiority in what was a fair race.

Always handy just off the pace, Richard Hughes never had to get serious, having every move covered and just giving his mount a couple of cracks of the whip.

Given a decent surface, he should be hard to beat.

Roger Varian has one or two promising two-year-olds, among them the Group Oneentered Farraaj, who can take the next step up the ladder in the VVB Engineering Novice Stakes. …
