When his grief overwhelmed him, Joseph Gibney would walk the grounds of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida's Sunbeam Road facility. His mother, Linda Gibney, spent her last weeks at Community Hospice's Earl Hadlow Center for Caring, where she died from complications of breast cancer in January 2009.

Joseph, now a 16-year-old junior at Bishop Kenny High School, was impressed with the care his mother received. And he was touched by the compassion shown by hospice staff. "They are the most caring, loving people," he said.

To express his gratitude, Joseph, a Boy Scout since age 11, opted to do his Eagle Scout project at the center. The result: an arbor and bench that was recently dedicated in memory of his mother.

"We have many patients and families for varying lengths of time so it's important that they have an environment that feels comfortable and homelike," said DeAnn Collins, executive director of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Foundation. "To have this beautiful spot where they can come and reflect in peace and quiet is a wonderful thing."

Ed Williamson, an adult Scout leader with carpentry skills, oversaw the project. Others assisting were adult leader Larry Ossi; troop members Colin and Travis Duffy, Nick Ossi and Thomas Williamson; and Joseph's father, Jack Gibney. Community Hospice donated the bricks and bench.
