LEICESTER boss Richard Cockerill has thrown fuel on the fire ahead of tomorrow's trip to Kingston Park, insisting that bottom-of-the-table Newcastle Falcons are "not going to get any better as the season goes along."

The East Midlands giants visit the North East still in search of their first Aviva Premiership win, but their director of rugby will have won few friends with his dismissive assessment of tomorrow's hosts.

The Falcons are without World Cup stars Euan Murray and Taiasina Tu'ifua for the 3.05pm kick-off, with injury also set to rule out Jeremy Manning, Jamie Helleur, Redford Pennycook, Andrew van der Heijden, Matt Thompson, Ryan Shortland, Jonny Golding and Michael Tait. Despite Newcastle's list of absentees reaching into double figures, Cockerill (pictured right) said: "They will look at it and say that Leicester are missing 16 blokes and we are missing two - so we have a good chance of getting a result.

"They need to get points on the board. But with all due respect to them, they are not going to get any better as the season goes along. They don't have anyone to come back into their squad."

Cockerill was notoriously confrontational during a playing career which saw him square-up to All Black counterpart Norm Hewitt during the Haka at Old Trafford back in 1997, and little seems to have changed in his new guise as Tigers' director of rugby.

Paradoxically, the former England hooker remains among the Falcons' biggest admirers, with no less than eight of his current squad being ex-Newcastle players.

Falcons head coach Alan Tait joked: "If you do well at Newcastle you get a contract at Leicester, so they obviously think we are doing something right.

"It's like anything, though. If you go to a shop and you are happy with what you get, you are going to keep going back to the same shop. …
