Calm Abbott Never Likely to Overreact

GREG Abbott insists he was not unduly worried about Carlisle United's four-game losing streak - but admits it was still a relief when it came to an end this week.

The Blues endured a nightmare fortnight which saw them knocked out of the Carling Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy, as well as suffering back-to-back league defeats against MK Dons and Hartlepool United.

But that run came to an end at Tranmere in midweek, as Abbott's side won 2-1 at Prenton Park to join five other clubs in joint-sixth place, although goal difference means they currently sit 11th in the League One table.

Carlisle now go into this afternoon's game at Chesterfield looking to build on that victory and climb back up the league.

Abbott said: "People made more of it [the run] than I did, to be honest.

"Do I worry about losing three or four games on the spin? I'd probably be lying if I said I didn't, but it doesn't affect me as it does others.

"I had to put it to the back of my mind and concentrate on getting the next win rather than dwelling on the four defeats. I have to think about 'where's my next win coming from', not about what is behind me.

"We got that win on Tuesday night at Tranmere, we're joint-sixth in the table which is a more than acceptable league position and points total, and we want to just keep on bettering that and keep on improving.

"I'm not happy to be out of the two cups but, with the size of our squad, would it have taken two cup runs? Probably not.

"Financially it doesn't help us one little bit, but hopefully a good run in the league will lift the gates, then a good run in the FA Cup and a big draw will give us some breathing space."

Abbott was encouraged by the performances of front men Lee Miller and Rory Loy at Tranmere, with Loy setting up the opening goal for Miller. …
