Wilson Is Still Worth the Rhapsody

BRIAN WILSON Royal Festival Hall FRAGILE legend Brian Wilson's blissful reworking of his Beach Boys masterpiece Pet Sounds, performed here almost a decade ago, was received with the near-religious fervour of a genuine second coming.

Happily for 69-year-old Wilson and his new, younger band, that was just the start of a wave of new albums and an extensive touring schedule. But it also means that repeats of that first sighting now feel more routine for his fans, making it easier to admit that much of his recent material isn't particularly good.

This weekend's three shows brought Wilson together with the music of his idol, George Gershwin. The coming together of two giants of different eras had moments of beauty, as when those familiar many-layered harmonies wrapped around Rhapsody in Blue's indelible melody, but there was also an air of novelty to the Beach-Boyification of songs such as They Can't Take That Away From Me. …
