WITH the 2011 season drawing to a close in most districts throughout Queensland country and only the QRL Intrust Super Cup grand final to be played this Sunday at Suncorp Stadium, I think all leagues can be quite satisfied with their season's efforts.

It has been a good season, especially considering the huge climatic conditions that hit the area earlier in the year and the economic and financial restraints imposed on supporters and spectators from these events.

Most districts are now taking a well-earned break, but some areas have already commenced accessing the past season and planning ahead, with clubs gearing up for their annual meetings and election of office bearers for next year.

Dates to remember for these meetings are Co Bundaberg Juniors 1pm Sunday, October 30, and Bundaberg Seniors 10am Sunday, November 6.

This weekend the inaugural Barry Brimelow Shield U-15 carnival will be held at hosts Western Suburbs' ground in Avoca Street.

This is a great innovation by Western Suburbs Juniors and it is a very rewarding gesture to recognise such a great clubman and volunteer for all his years of service, on and off the field.

The games will start at 8am on Saturday and Sunday, finishing about 5pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday.

Teams will play at least three games on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Games will be two 15-minutes halves, with a five-minute break to change ends and a five-minute break between games, while the final at 1pm Sunday between the top two teams will be two 20-minute halves.

Teams from Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Central Burnett and South West leagues have nominated for the carnival.

Congratulations and best wishes to the Western Suburbs Juniors for the weekend.

Bundaberg lost a great man with the sad passing of BRL Life Member and Patron John Byrne OAM yesterday.

John was a foundation member of the Past Brothers Rugby League Club and he gave outstanding service to not only the club but the game at large and the broader community throughout his life. He will be sadly missed by all. …
