'Predator' Locked Away

A YOUNG Mackay region woman's life was ruined forever when she was raped by her sports coach at the age of 15 and gave birth to his son when she was just 16.

The rape had devastating consequences and caused great trauma to the victim, Crown prosecutor Chris Winlaw told the District Court in Mackay yesterday.

District Court Judge John Baulch, SC, said the coach who raped her was a sexual predator who raped for his own sexual gratification and who had shown no remorse.

The coach, then aged 52 but now aged 62, had pleaded not guilty to deprivation of liberty and rape in November, 2001.

A jury of seven men and five women found him not guilty of deprivation of liberty and guilty of rape after a two-day trial.

The coach was sentenced yesterday to eight years in jail with no recommendation for early release.

The coach, the girl, their sport or the township where they lived, cannot be identified by law. …
