AFL: Geelong star Steve Johnson will leave a C[pounds sterling]massive holeC[yen] in the Cats' grand final attack if he cannot overcome a knee injury, fellow star forward James Podsiadly has conceded.

The Cats waltzed into the premiership decider against Collingwood by convincingly downing a tired West Coast 17.15 (117) to 10.9 (69) in front of 59,455 spectators at the MCG yesterday.

However, Geelong's joy at reaching a fourth grand final in five years was tempered by the loss of 2007 Norm Smith Medallist Johnson, who was stretchered off early in the third term.

Johnson's left knee buckled under the weight of a heavy Andrew Embley tackle, leaving the Cat writhing in pain and prompting initial fears he could be wiped out for next season, not just the grand final.

Fans were buoyed when Johnson later reappeared from the rooms.

Club officials are confident there is no major structural damage, although Johnson will undergo scans and is still considered unlikely to play the Magpies next Saturday.

Podsiadly, who kicked three goals, said Johnson's absence against Collingwood would hurt dearly, particularly after the Cats lost fellow forward Daniel Menzel in their previous final.

C[pounds sterling]Without a doubt, I reckon he's our best forward,C[yen] Podsiadly said of Johnson.

C[pounds sterling]With Dan Menzel going down, he (Johnson) is probably our biggest X-factor down there, so we definitely need those two guys in our forward line to be competitive. …
