THE Northumberland Football Association's under-18 side kicked off their new Northern Counties Championship season in fine style with a 5-0 victory against Sheffield's Hallamshire.

A solid backline gave the hosts the platform from which to express themselves on what was a fantastic playing surface at Whitley Park. North took control of the game from the whistle, the visitors struggling to deal with their passing and movement.

The NFA gained the breakthrough from a wellworked corner, Liam Gillesphey heading home from a great cross from James Darby.

Excellent passing and linkup play from Robert McCrudden and Kyle Downie set David Hall free and his cross was met at the back post by Peter Ravenhill to double the home side's lead.

McCrudden, in particular, was giving the Sheffield defence a torrid time, showing good strength.

He combined well with Downie, who finished a leftfooted shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 3-0. …
