DANGER driver Mark Wright tried to outrun the police helicopter at high speed on a child's motorbike with no helmet.

The Northumbria Police helicopter had been out on other duties when officers' attention was drawn to Wright's speeding bike.

In a futile attempt to evade the helicopter, drunk Wright weaved in and out of traffic, mounted pavements and went the wrong way around a roundabout.

The chase only came to an end when Wright's bike overheated and broke down because of the way he had driven it.

Jailing him for eight months, Judge Roger Thorn, at Newcastle Crown Court, told him: "Driving of this nature, in drink and trying to evade detection from the police helicopter requires an immediate custodial sentence. It was a child's bike and had no business to be on the road.

"It's my public duty to protect innocent road users."

The helicopter was out in Newcastle around 8.15pm on June 14 when officers were out on other business both Wright and his pillion passenger were not wearing helmets when they were spotted. …
