THE proposed development of a 460,000 sq ft facility for Hitachi Rail Europe at Newton Aycliffe says much about the advantages of doing business in the North East.

The process of selecting a development site at Amazon Park involved assessing about 40 sites across the UK and it was clear that the Newton Aycliffe location, already a strong industrial and logistics/ distribution centre, was a strong contender from the outset.

In answer to the question 'why?' we looked at site availability, quality of the site in terms of ease of developing out the project, communications with rail access being paramount and port access enabling us to import and, in due course, export. The site search was an essential part of delivering future growth for Hitachi in the UK and Europe.

Newton Aycliffe has it all. Our site is one mile from a motorway. Rail access and the creation of a 1km train test track were comparatively straightforward and road and rail access to Teesport was in place. …
