THREE brave women who jumped on a would-be car thief were praised by a judge when he jailed him yesterday.

The trio, in their early twenties, held Gary Watson, 21, until a police officer arrived to arrest him, but only after he had been headbutted by the thief.

Suzanne Shafer was entertaining her friends at her Middlesbrough home on June 14 when they heard the sound of breaking glass and then the alarm of her Renault Megane car.

They looked through the house window and saw Watson leaning into the vehicle on the car park of St Alphonsus Church.

Miss Shafer grabbed him by the waist in a bear hug, and in the struggle she noticed that he was clutching a screwdriver, said prosecutor Joseph Spencer.

Watson began to struggle more wildly, and when she grabbed him by the neck and the wrist he dropped the screwdriver, Teesside Crown Court was told.

Her friends Laura Johnson and Niki Stannard joined in the struggle during which Watson's hoodie fell off, and Miss Johnson was struck in the face. …
